Will Steam Cleaning Carpet Kill Mold

It’s never fun to discover mold in your home, as it smells bad and is a health hazard. As soon as you notice any mold in your house, you should work on getting rid of it. One of the many options to fight mold is steam cleaning, but will steam cleaning carpet kill mold? That is the question you should ask before getting your hopes up.

Will Steam Cleaning Carpet Kill Mold

In this article we will answer whether or not steam cleaning will get rid of mold completely. The post will also detail the process of fighting mold infestation in your carpet.

Ways to kill Mold in Your Carpet

There are several methods to get rid of mold from your carpet. Top in the list is steam cleaning. It is true that steam cleaning your carpet kills mold. However, you should dry your carpet adequately once you use steam cleaner on it.

Other methods are using baking soda, vinegar, and HEPA vacuuming. Each of the methods is effective if you do it the right way. Remember, you should not combine the methods. Use each one at its own time and settle for what is effective to you. Once the mold is eliminated, our carpet cleaning services can ensure your carpet remains free of buildup and bacteria.

Step by Step Process of Killing Mold from Your Carpet

Regardless of the method you use, you should follow the same procedure. Here is a general approach to dealing with mold infestation in your carpet;

  • Identify Where the Mold is Lodged: is it in your car mat or house carpet? Knowing where the mold is infested is the first step to dealing with the demon. Do your investigation and identify the exact area where the mold has set camp.
  • Once you know the exact location of the mold, you can now go ahead and choose the method you are going to use. Remember the location of the mold will play a big role in determining the most effective method. For instance, if the mold is deep into the carpet fabric, you will require a deep penetrating method to reach to its roots.
  • Before you get to work, ensure that you are wearing protective gear. Mold is dangerous and you should not breathe it in or let it touch your skin.
  • If you are not comfortable handling the mold problem, it is advisable to get professional help. The advantage of using experts is that the problem is dealt with completely.

How to Prevent Mold

It is always better to prevent mold than having to remove it. Since we know its cause is moisture, you should do your best to keep your house and carpet from excess moisture. Increase your house lighting, improve ventilation, fix leaks, and vacuum your carpet regularly. Without moisture, you will never have to deal with the nightmare of mold.

In Conclusion

Will steam cleaning carpet kill mold? Of course, yes. But this is not the only method you can use to deal with mold. Baking soda and vinegar are also other effective methods. Start by identifying the location of the mold and choosing the most effective method. With the mold gone, our team here at Ecodry Carpet Cleaning New York will ensure your carpets are cleaned thoroughly and free of grime and stains.

Common Carpet Cleaning Misconceptions

Carpet Cleaning Mistakes You Should Avoid

Regarding caring for carpets, the majority don’t consider much beyond vacuuming and/or the occasional spot cleaning due to a pet accident or a good steaming because the in-laws are coming over. We assume you’ve spent good money on your flooring and as most people, we also assume you’d like to protect your carpets as much as possible. Unfortunately, ignorance isn’t always “bliss”. We will take a look at a couple common carpet cleaning misconceptions people make that could end up costing you more money in the long run.

“Those sprinkle-on deodorizers work just fine on my carpets, it would be silly to pay a professional”

BEWARE – THESE CAN WREAK HAVOC ON YOUR CARPETING! Most sprinkle-on carpet products contain talcum powder, talcum powder does not have the ability to dissolve in water. After repeated use of sprinkle-on products, the powder accumulates and will embed itself in your carpeting. The next time you go to clean your carpets, the water from the process will become absorbed by the talcum and dry, which will result in very distinct and noticeable white stains throughout your carpeting.

“We just purchased a brand new home last year, our carpets don’t need cleaning”

Most folks don’t wait to take their vehicle to the mechanic after the engine starts knocking. They have it maintained, most new cars will notify you when it’s time to take it in for maintenance. Granted, most people, not all, don’t spend $30k on their carpets. That said, if you’re going to wait until your carpets are noticeably dirty, you could be doing irreversible damage to your brand new floors. Dirt by nature, is abrasive. The motion of the daily wear and tear from people and pets will not only cause that abrasive dirt to work its way into the carpeting fiber, it will actually cause that fiber to begin to break down. If not cleaned properly and regularly you could be throwing money down the drain.

“We can’t afford to hire a professional, we will save money and rent the machine ourselves”

You see them all over, those little red things at nearly every grocery store, Lowe’s and Home Depot with stickers of happy people and bleached white carpets. Yeah.. we see those too. What initially may seem like a wise, economical move, they have some critical downfalls that may make you want to reconsider saving a couple bucks. The problem with those little red rental units is that the volume of water they incorporate into your carpeting is impossible for them to remove effectively. Well, that becomes kind of a problem here in the northeast with the humidity. Being that we’re not blessed with an arid climate, the moisture left behind by the happy red rental unit can take forever to dry properly, which often causes mold, mildew and destruction of the backing underneath your carpets.

Maintenance and regular care of your carpeting are critical to not only the aesthetic of your home or workspace but getting the most out of your investment as well. Ecodry NY will not only have your carpets as clean and dry as they can possibly get, we will help you protect your investment long-term.

When Selling Your Home, Clean Carpets Are Imperative

Into the spring and throughout the summer, traditionally we see an increase in people selling homes. In the process of selling your home, there’s some overhead expenses that most people invest in to ensure they’re able to get top dollar on their home. Flooring is one of the first things potential buyers notice when they walk through the door. The quintessential term “it takes money to make money” and getting a home prepared to sell is a prime example of this. Having clean carpets, along with your tile and grout looking as good as possible will have an impact on people walking through and in-turn, help your home sell faster.

Of course, there may be tile in the bathrooms and laminate in the kitchen, but traditionally, carpeting is still what covers most of the floors in a majority of homes throughout the country. Sure wood flooring and laminate are becoming more popular options, but carpet is still the top choice for living rooms and bedrooms everywhere. Buyers are going to notice your carpeting and it’s condition. Let’s face it, in order to sell your home quickly, your carpeting needs to look better than the “comps”.

The national average is that a couple will look at 15 homes before they buy one. What this means is that most potential buyers have a basis for comparison – and they are measuring your home against every other home they’ve seen. Yep, in regards to your carpets, it’s a good idea to ‘Keep up with the Jones’ If your carpeting doesn’t look as good or better, it’s an automatic deduction, and you can be sure they will automatically estimate the cost of replacing it, and deduct that from the asking price for your home. The condition of your carpets can actually COST you money! And if the carpeting is truly terrible, or worse – it smells, it can drive a buyer out of a home entirely. Having your carpets, tile AND upholstery professionally cleaned prior to listing or showing your home is an absolute necessity.

The ‘do-it-yourself’ approach surely is better than nothing but unless you’re a professional who does it for a living, your carpets will not get as clean as they potentially could. Absolutely, it’s slightly more economical. But if you account for the cost of renting the equipment, the cost of the chemicals, time and energy required to get as much dirt and grime out of your carpets as your able to, is it worth the savings? EcodryNY will come out to your home, save you the time and energy, AND have your carpets looking better & healthier than any DIY option. If you’re considering selling your home, clean carpets are imperative and EcodryNY love to help you get the most return on your investment as you possibly can. Carpet Advice For Pet Issues

We have clients who have more extensive pet issues than others and as pet lovers ourselves, we try to offer some light at the end of a dim tunnel. The first step to ensuring your carpet looks great is to have your pet trained and a specific area established that is dedicated to them. It is always a good idea to stay prepared for accidents and other mishaps, especially with a new or young pet. More specifically, if you have male dogs, you may encounter pee problems that need to be dealt with. Dogs mark their territory, as do cats, and a great way to minimize this is to make a solution of two parts Listerine and one part water. Place this solution in a spray bottle. As soon as you spot the area that has dog urine blot it dry and place 1/2 cup of warm water and 1/2 cup of vinegar if the area is large if not just put one part water and one part white vinegar and scrub it and then use a vacuum to suck all the moisture out. Lastly spray the area with the Listerine and water solution. This should help get the smell out and prevent further markings of territory in the area. Contact us today on (315) 271-5627 to find out how we can help you maintain your carpet so clean no one would even know you had pets!

Carpet Advice For Growing Families With Children

Regardless if they are small toddlers or careless teenagers, children can wreak havoc on your carpets. Personally, I’ve yet to meet a kid (small or big) to come in a house, remove their muddy shoes or clean up a spilled soda when they “accidentally” do it. No, most of the time, they trudge through your beautiful soft carpets and realize after they come back out of their room. Or, that spilled soda, gets covered up by moms favorite pillow. It happens. No matter how you’d like to slice or dice it, children add a significant amount of time and energy to your carpet cleaning efforts. The good news is that there is a solution to almost everything. The first step is to try and catch the problem as soon as it happens so you can act on it. If you are in the middle of something that cannot be left unattended wet a towel thoroughly and place it over the area until you can deal with it later. The moisture of the towel will keep the problem area moist and it will be easier to deal with later. Next, blot up or absorb as much of the liquid as you can. If it is something that is not all liquid, such as mud or juice with pulp, you should first pick out the small pieces of mud or other particles that can be removed with your fingers. Once you removed particles and are left with a more dry stain you can then select your weapon of choice.

For mud and other common stains scrubbing the area with dish soap and baking soda might be the solution. However, for other problems such as marker stains and other ink stains you may need to go out and buy a cheap lacquer hairspray, specifically one without oils and spray the area with the hairspray until it moistens the stain then using an absorbent cloth blot the area, until you can remove some of the color off the stain, repeat this as many times necessary, wetting the stain with the hairspray and removing as much ink as possible with the cloth. The stain should be able to loose all the color this way, if there is still a faint marking on the carpet you may try adding baking soda and leaving it for a bit then scrubbing the area and vacuuming it.

Having a clean carpet is harder when you have kids or pets, the carpet suffers a lot more wear and tear and is constantly begging for attention. Scrubbing and blotting, cleaning and vacuuming can take up much of your time and strength, not to mention patience. Stop fretting over all the problems and stains that need to be dealt with and leave the carpet cleaning to us. We care about your family and your carpet that is our HOST™ method of extraction is safe and environmentally friendly.
